join us to celebrate the latest collaboration from this award winning team
Nicola Davies is returning to Number Seven late this summer to celebrate the publication of A First Book of the Sea, which will be the third title in this popular series. We are thrilled that joining her on the day will be illustrator Emily Sutton. The pair have worked together previously producing the colour filled Lots and award winning Tiny.
Throughout the morning visitors to Number Seven will be able to talk with Nicola and Emily, discover what inspires them both and hear about future projects. Nicola has a wonderful in-depth knowledge of the natural world which she just loves to share. Emily is known for her distinctive, detailed pencil drawings and studied illustration at Edinburgh School of Art. A love of folk art and admiration for 20th century illustrators such as Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious echos in her work. She was delighted to be invited to join Nicola at Number Seven, proclaiming that it gave her a valid reason to visit Exmoor and sketch the ponies!
A First Book of the Sea
A spellbinding collection of poems about the oceans of the world and their shores. With this book, children can swim alongside dolphins and flying fish, pore over rock pools and sail from pole to pole and back, learning about everything from phosphorescence and plankton to manta rays and puffins - all in the comfort of their bedroom. Emily Sutton's exquisite watercolours capture the breathless excitement of a child's first glimpse of the sea, the majesty of ancient trading ships and the sheer, staggering wonder of the humpback whale. The perfect companion to international bestsellers A First Book of Nature and A First Book of Animals, this book is sure to enthrall and inspire readers of all ages.
We do hope you are able to join us. A selection of their titles will be available to purchase throughout the day and of course Nicola and Emily will gladly sign them for you. If you are unable to make it in person we can always arrange delivery, simply contact the shop with your desired personalised dedication.

A First Book of Animals: 'Its poetic text and ravishing illustrations by Petr Horacek encourage children to understand animals as sentient beings - dreamy, hungry competitive and wonderful.' New Statesman
Lots: 'Clear, direct, involving text, coupled with vivid, delicate illustrations make for a truly special work of non-fiction.' The Guardian
King of the Sky: 'Most of the world doesn't have to think twice when asked where they're from or where home is; some children have to think harder about the answer. Davies recognises this - her sensitive, uplifting tale about find your place in a new strange new land could just as well be about a refugee as it could any child moving to a new town.' The Times
